NOLA’s Health Director, Dr. Jennifer Avegno, made the announcement Wednesday that the indoor mask mandate will be lifted beginning at 6 a.m. today.
Avegno said officials will consider lifting the vaccine mandate later this month.
This announcement came at the conclusion of one of the most successful Mardi Gras celebrations in recent history.
A court hearing was scheduled to take place this morning but could be rendered moot under the new guidelines. More than 100 plaintiffs opposed to the mandates sued Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Avegno and the New Orleans Health Department, accusing them of violating their constitutional rights with restrictions the officials say have curbed the spread of COVID-19.
The state’s health department said earlier this month it does not expect the hundreds of thousands of tourists who came to the city for Mardi Gras to cause a spike COVID-19 cases.
