UPDATE: The victim was identified as Samuel Goodine, 36 years old of Hammond.
On Wednesday, the Hammond Police Department began investigating an incident where a pedestrian was hit by a train on East Charles Street. It happened at approximately 3:30 pm on Wednesday.
Other police were called in to direct gridlocked traffic through the downtown area after the train stopped, preventing east west travel on Highway 190 and at other nearby train crossings. The victim has not yet been identified but pronounced dead on the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
