Yesterday the head of the New Orleans Health Department warned that the delta variant could jeopardize the progress the city has made in recent months.
Dr. Jennifer Avegno said the solution is simple, get more people vaccinated.
In early July, the city was awarded almost $4 million dollars in federal funding to increase vaccination efforts. Avegno said the health department is working with local health systems and other groups to meet people in the communities where they live.
Avegno stressed that vaccination efforts will be key in keeping the number of new coronavirus cases down and preventing the further spread of the delta variant. The city has a 1.6% positivity rate right now, which Avegno said will likely increase in the coming days. She said if the city continues to push vaccination, then they have a better chance of a more normal fall, which already has several festivals and other major events planned.
