–On June 25, 2025, a Washington Parish jury found 25-year-old Christian Cartez Myers of Bogalusa guilty of second-degree murder, assault by drive-by shooting, and illegal use of weapons after just one hour of deliberation. The conviction stems from an August 2022 incident in which Myers, seeking revenge against a man who was related to the victim, drove a vehicle involved in a drive-by shooting that killed 50-year-old Veronique Allen as she sat inside her Main Street home during a family gathering. Investigators used surveillance footage to identify Myers, who later admitted to driving the car used in the shooting before fleeing to Maine, where he was arrested and extradited. Prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Le’Anne Malnar and Christina Fisher and tried before Judge William H. Burris, Myers now faces a mandatory life sentence, with sentencing set for July 21.

–On Friday the U.S. Supreme Court ordered a re-argument in Louisiana v. Callais, a case challenging Louisiana’s congressional map known as SB8, which currently remains in effect and was used in the 2024 elections. SB8 was enacted in January 2024 after courts found the previous map likely violated the Voting Rights Act by diluting Black voting power, prompting state lawmakers to draw a new map that included two majority-Black districts. While civil rights groups backed SB8 for expanding Black representation, a group of non-Black voters sued, arguing it was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander under the 14th Amendment. After a lower court struck down the map, the Supreme Court stayed that ruling and will now revisit the case, likely in the fall, issuing a new schedule and possibly additional questions to be addressed.
