–Last week, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Narcotics detectives arrested 37-year-old Clayton Joseph Ducre of Lacombe after a traffic stop led to the discovery of illegal drugs and firearms in his vehicle, on his person, and at his residence. Ducre, a convicted felon with multiple outstanding warrants, was found in possession of prescription pills, methamphetamine hidden on his body, and large quantities of narcotics including meth, marijuana, and various pills, along with firearms, drug paraphernalia, and over $2,000 in cash. A subsequent search of his home uncovered further evidence of drug distribution. He was booked on numerous felony charges, including drug trafficking, illegal firearm possession, and bringing contraband into a penal institution.
— As hurricane season begins and the Fourth of July weekend approaches, The Blood Center is urging residents across the Gulf South to donate blood now to ensure a stable supply in case of emergencies. With summer bringing fewer donations due to school breaks, vacations, and weather disruptions—combined with an increased need for blood during holiday travel—officials warn that the region must prepare in advance. “We need the public to respond now to ensure we are adequately prepared—before disaster strikes,” said Billy Weales, President and CEO of The Blood Center. The organization must collect 200 to 250 donations daily to serve over 50 hospitals across South Louisiana and Southern Mississippi, but fewer than 5% of eligible donors give each year. Blood is essential for patients with cancer, heart disease, and other serious conditions and cannot be manufactured. The Blood Center encourages individuals, businesses, faith groups, and civic organizations to donate or host blood drives. With 11 donor centers and daily mobile drives, it’s easy to help—visit TheBloodCenter.org or call (800) 86-BLOOD to schedule an appointment.
–WDSU-TV reports growing tension as the St. Tammany Transparency and Resource Accountability Committee (TRAC) reviews agencies like the fire department and mosquito abatement, with some leaders accusing District Attorney Collin Sims of leveraging the process to increase his own funding. Fire Chief Randy Hess criticized Sims at a recent council meeting, claiming Sims is “trying to create funding for himself by smearing organizations,” while Sims insists the effort aims only to save taxpayer money, not redirect funds. TRAC, approved by the parish council, can only make budget recommendations, with any tax changes requiring public approval. Though Sims doesn’t sit on TRAC, his office aids in developing tools to detect waste across taxing agencies. Critics focus on the mosquito abatement board’s $10 million budget and large reserves, questioning Sims’s involvement in an entity outside parish government. The abatement agency stresses its funding is vital for quick mosquito control after storms to protect public health. Sims acknowledges concerns but emphasizes the need for thorough spending reviews amid St. Tammany’s rapid growth since its government restructuring.
