
St Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper recently spoke to the Maritime Museum of Louisiana on coastal restoration and protection projects around the historic Tchefuncte Lighthouse and Madisonville area.
They include the Tchefuncte Habitat Restoration & Shoreline Protection: $1.6 million project to build a protective breakwater, 300’ dock and reinforced shoreline. Construction is expected to begin Summer 2024. The Lower Tchefuncte Breakwater: a $3.2 million project to provide protection from immediate threats and simulate the historic eastern peninsula at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River. Construction is expected to begin Fall 2024. And the Tchefuncte West Bank Marsh Restoration: Marsh creation utilizing 161,000 CY of dredged material from Lake Pontchartrain to rebuild land and protect wetlands to the west of the Tchefuncte River.
He said these projects are a part of the 16 parishwide coastal restoration and protection projects President Cooper’s administration is undertaking through federal GOMESA dollars.
