On April 21 at approximately 6:00 p.m., the Hammond Police Department responded to a two-vehicle crash with injuries on I-12 Eastbound past the Range Road overpass.
The crash claimed the life of 68 YO Lawrance J. Motichek, Jr. of Ozyka, Mississippi.
The initial investigation revealed that traffic on I-12 had slowed due to a previous accident, and because of this, the driver of a 2021 Ford Bronco had come to a near stop in the left lane. At the same time, Motichek was also traveling eastbound in the left lane in his 2008 Ford Fusion and did not stop or attempt to, then rear-ended the Bronco. The Bronco came to rest in the median, and the Fusion came to rest on the right shoulder.
Seven people were transported to North Oaks Medical Center with various injuries.
Motichek did not survive.
The Hammond Police Department cannot stress enough the benefit of using seatbelts and looking ahead while driving. Not every crash is survivable, but it only takes a second to click your seatbelt.
