District Attorney Collin Sims announced that a St. Tammany Parish grand jury has indicted three Slidell teens—Adrian Waughtal, Mason Fischer, and Michael Lanier—in connection with the March 23, 2025, death of Sergeant Grant Candies of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, who was killed while deploying a spike strip during a high-speed chase. Waughtal and Fischer, both 17, were indicted for second-degree murder and multiple related charges, while 18-year-old Lanier was indicted for manslaughter and other offenses. The case was presented by Assistant District Attorneys Ronnie Gracianette and Gary Tromblay, with detectives Sean Scott and Jacob Schwebel leading the investigation. Although Louisiana law allows the death penalty for killing a police officer, all three suspects were 17 at the time of the incident, making them ineligible for capital punishment under the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2005 ruling in Roper v. Simmons. The defendants are scheduled for arraignment on July 14, 2025.
