On Sept. 26, 2022, the Hammond Police Department responded to a complaint of shots fired near Martin Luther King Ave. with a black male and female in a black sedan with a temporary license plate. While surveying the area, the occupants of a white vehicle flagged down the officers. The occupants of the vehicle said three women in the road began beating and throwing items at their vehicle. They drove the vehicle away from the women and later returned to the area where they encountered a black sedan with a female driver and male passenger with a patch of blonde hair. The male passenger climbed out of the window of the black sedan and began shooting at the vehicle which was occupied by three adults and three children younger than 12.
None of the victims were injured from the shooting.
While enroute to the crime scene, another officer noticed a black sedan, matching the description the victims provided, crossing the railroad tracks on N Holly St. The officer stopped the vehicle and asked the driver and passenger if they had any weapons. The driver explained she had a 9mm pistol in her bag between her left leg and the car door. Officers also noticed the male passenger had a blonde patch of hair similar to the description of the shooter. At this time, officers found a shell casing on the exterior of the black sedan between the rear window and the trunk. It was later determined that the casings found at the scene of the shooting had the same markings as the casing found on the exterior of the black sedan the defendant was shooting from. During their investigation, officers found seven 9mm shell casings at the scene of the shooting.
Both the driver and the passenger were arrested and transported to the Hammond City Jail for questioning.
