A big crowd was on hand for last night’s Tangipahoa Parish School Board meeting where the Teachers of the Year were honored.
The district celebrated its best teachers at the start of the board meeting before a standing-room-only audience.
Later in the meeting, Superintendent Melissa Stilley pointed out that the district currently has four emergency days that have gone unused in the school calendar, so the Tangipahoa Parish School Board voted to extend the Mardi Gras break two days, giving students a full week off from school this year for Carnival. Stilley said the district builds four emergency days into the calendar to address situations like weather and this year the district had not used any emergency days, which left four extra days in the calendar.
If the district does not need the other two emergency days between now and the end of the year, Stilley said she will ask the board to consider closing school two days early in May, but that decision will come closer to the end of the semester.
