Suicide is one of the most significant public health issues facing the word today. It has existed throughout history, across all cultures and time periods. At any given time, 1 in 25 people are thinking about suicide to some degree. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged 15-29.
Suicide rarely happens without warning. As peers, students may be in the best position to recognize when a friend might need help and help them get it. Skills training is one of the most effective prevention approaches. The knowledge of Suicide prevention empowers the community. Everyone can play a role in creating powerful safety networks to support those in need. By instilling life-saving skills throughout communities, we can protect people where they live, work, play and learn.
This training program will give individuals the skills and knowledge to keep family, friends, co-workers and others safe from suicide. Trainer training costs $3,250 per person. This grant will train 7 people to become trainers who can train other community members how to become more comfortable talking about suicide, keep loved ones safe in times of distress, support friends, build professional skills and have peace mind.
