An inmate at the Washington Parish Jail was pronounced dead Thursday after possibly ingesting a toxic substance.
Officials with the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office say deputies and a registered nurse responded to an inmate who appeared to be in medical distress around 2 p.m.
The inmate was removed from the housing unit and provided on-site medical care before being transported to Riverside Medical Center where he died.
Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators, along with investigators from the Louisiana State Police, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the deceased inmate, along with other inmates, possibly ingested a toxic substance.
The other inmates were medically cleared.
The deceased inmate’s family has been notified.
