State lawmakers have returned to Baton Rouge to begin redrawing Louisiana’s political maps for the next decade.
Now the public gets their first look at the proposed maps.
Six bills, all from state senators, were posted on the Legislature’s website last night.
Three senators, including Slidell’s Sharon Hewitt, a Republican, submitted proposals for how to split Louisiana up into six congressional districts.
Each map will be debated, along with many others, during the three-week redistricting session that starts today at 5 p.m.
Republican majorities will control the agenda as district lines are crafted for everything from six U.S. representatives, 105 state representatives, and 39 state senators.
It might also include state school board members, state utility regulators, and even state Supreme Court justices.
Thanks to term-limits, few of the current lawmakers were around the last time Louisiana took on this task of readjusting district lines.
