The pilot killed in the helicopter crash on I-10 was identified as Joshua Hawley of Denham Springs.
New photos that came out yesterday showed the moments just before Hawley’s, helicopter crashed into the eastbound lanes of the Bonnet Carre Spillway.
Witnesses say the chopper was flying low and fast before it clipped power lines near the interstate, ending in a fiery explosion. The dashcam photos show flying conditions were far from ideal. Where powerlines are usually visible, fog enveloped them.
The images were taken from a vehicle near the crash site on I-10.
The pilot of the helicopter, a certified flight instructor and former first responder, was the only person onboard the Dec. 14 flight from Baton Rouge to the New Orleans Lakefront Airport.
In a related story I-10 will close in both directions Sunday (Dec. 19) at the Bonnet Carre Spillway bridge to allow Entergy to repair power lines damaged from Tuesday’s helicopter crash, according to Louisiana State Police.
The closure was originally scheduled to take place Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. but the repairs will now be postponed until Sunday.
On Tuesday, crews worked overnight to clear the wreckage of the downed helicopter.
