At a press conference yesterday St. Tammany Parish officials sought to refute several of the biggest stories floating around on social media about the proposed Slidell area gambling resort, calling the suggestion that a second casino is already on the table a misrepresentation meant to confuse the voters.
Parish President Mike Cooper and Council Chair Mike Lorino both spoke.
Early voting is underway as voters decide whether to let Peninsula Pacific Entertainment build and operate a $325 million casino on Lake Pontchartrain near the Twin Spans.
Forces for and against the venture have spent millions on advertising.
Earlier this week the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that the referendum may go forward as planned on Dec. 11, despite several attempts in court to derail it on the grounds that the vote would be unconstitutional. The court said any legal objections may be heard after the referendum, if the casino is approved at the polls.
Cooper and Lorino refused to voice a personal stance on the casino project itself, both saying that the decision is in the hands of the voters.
