While the “Reinvention: Creative Pivots in the Pandemic” art exhibition will come to an end on August 27, the messages that its artists have shared will remain for years to come via a COVID-19 time capsule, to be housed in the Slidell Museum.
Included will be exhibit artists’ stories plus audio histories collected by St. Tammany Parish Public Library.
The public is invited to share their stories as to the impact of the pandemic on their lives. Kim Bergeron, the “Reinvention” curator, says the goal of the time capsule is to ensure that future generations know about our pandemic experiences not through a few paragraphs in a history book, but through the real, personal stories of people in the community.
Time capsule submissions can be delivered to the Department of Cultural & Public Affairs at 250 Bouscaren St. (third floor,) or the cannon-side mailbox at the Slidell Museum, 2020 First Street. Story contributions also may be mailed to Time Capsule, P.O. Box 3343, Slidell, LA 70459. Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 30.
“Reinvention” is on view through August 27 in the Slidell Cultural Center. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday, 10 am to 2 pm and by appointment.
The exhibition is presented by Artists & Causes and hosted by the City of Slidell, and is supported in part by a grant from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation. The event time capsule has been funded by St. Tammany Parish Commission on Cultural Affairs. Additional support for the event has been provided by the Northshore Media Group (Edge of the Lake magazine, The Highway Radio and The Lake Radio,) Slidell Magazine, Northshore Cultural Economy Coalition and The Northshore Collaborative.
