The announcement of who is going to redevelop the old Six Flags site in New Orleans East could come today.
The 200-acre park was flooded after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 and has been empty since.
People living in that part of the city say new development is desperately needed.
A city selection committee was formed to pick a partner. Six submissions were reviewed in March, with committee members looking at the experience and financial backing each team had to realize its vision.
There have been multiple attempts in the past to attract developers to the former amusement park, but none have generated much promise beyond the proposal phase. Former Mayor Ray Nagin attempted to forge a deal with an upstart amusement park developer and the Nickelodeon network in 2009, but the relationship never materialized. Three years later, a proposal to bring an outlet mall to the New Orleans East location gained momentum. But after the city approved a comparable project at the Riverwalk, the development team behind the Six Flags proposal pulled out.
