The first day of the 2021 legislative session followed tradition with the governor giving his State of the State address yesterday.
This year, Gov. John Bel Edwards delivered the address at Southern University instead of the Louisiana State Capitol.
The governor began his opening remarks recognizing a number of healthcare and frontline workers who continue to play a key role in combating COVID-19. He laid out his priority to improve the state’s education system, including increasing the pay of K through 12 and college educators. Another topic in his address was the minimum wage, which has been at $7.25 since 2009. Gov. Edwards said he will support any efforts to raise it.
The two-month session must end by June 10.
