The Live Release Rate for the St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter reached 92%, the highest it has ever been, for the months of January and February of 2021.
Officials say this rate was achieved through a coordinated effort by Shelter staff to facilitate shelter adoptions and work with credible compassionate rescue groups to pull animals for adoption or transport animals for adoption to other locations in the United States where there is a shortage of adoptable animals. The St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter Rescue Coordinator works to match animals with their ideal forever families, while shelter staff and volunteers work to care for and socialize animals surrendered or brought into the Shelter.
Mike Cooper, St. Tammany Parish President, says they will continue to build on those relationships as they see many more adoptable animals matched with loving, suitable homes.
A more user-friendly landing page for Animal Services — www.stpgov.org/pets — now includes all shelter intake and outcome statistics; current partner rescue groups; and adoptable pets. More features will be added going forward. Starting yesterday, Animal Services will be open to the public as we move into Phase III. Appointments for adoptions are not required, but still recommended. Volunteers will also be welcomed back to the Shelter.
