At least five states have dropped or rolled back their mask mandates, including Texas and Mississippi. Citing hospitalizations on the decline, and a variety of new treatments for COVID-19, 33 Louisiana House lawmakers are saying now is the time to open Louisiana fully back up. Fourteen of the lawmakers signing the letter to Edwards are from the New Orleans Metro/Northshore area.
Back in October of 2020, House Republican lawmakers signed a petition invoking state rules that allow them to put an end to Louisiana’s COVID-19 restrictions imposed by Governor John Bel Edwards, at least temporarily. That petition was signed by 65 House lawmakers.
In a statement provided by Edwards’ office, he says he has not read the letter but will continue to follow the guidance of health leaders who he says none of whom suggest lifting the executive order currently in place. Louisiana’s mask mandate was extended with Edwards recently signed order on Tuesday. Alabama decided to extend its mask mandate for another month, and Arkansas said it would consider lifting its mandate on March 31 if certain goals are met.
