Calling the Martin Luther King Junior holiday a day for remembrance and action, Mayor Latoya Cantrell announced action her administration is going to restructure the city’s procurement process to ensure minority-owned businesses get their share of city government contracts. Cantrell said a city study found the majority of businesses in New Orleans are minority-owned. The goal is to provide more accountability from businesses as well as city government. She said City government has an overall goal of 35 percent utilization by economically disadvantaged businesses for all public spending.
