October 29 Hammond Police, with the assistance of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office, arrested shooting suspect 25 YO Dario Carter at a residence in Hammond without incident. Carter was booked into jail on charges of Attempted Second Degree Murder, Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, and Obstruction of Justice. The case stems from a fight. While the fight was being broken up by a bystander, Carter pulled a firearm and shot the victim. The victim was transported to North Oaks Medical Center for medical treatment and is in stable condition. In a separate case, the Hammond Police Department Detectives were able to identify 21 YO Damari Antonio Coleman of Hammond, as one of the shooters in an incident earlier this month in Mooney Avenue Park and he has been arrested.
On Oct. 6, officers responded to Mooney Park after a 17-year-old victim was shot in the leg and transported to North Oaks for treatment. Witness statements taken at the park suggested that several people were playing basketball at the time when unknown people who were not involved in the basketball game began firing shots, striking the victim. Investigators indicated that the victim was not believed to be the intended target in this shooting. Detectives are still looking for additional shooters who were seen leaving the area in a black sedan.
