The St. Tammany Parish Department of Public Works will open six self-serve sandbag locations beginning at 7:30 a.m. this morning. Due to expected weather conditions the location will close at noon. All locations (with the exception of the Old Levee District Site) will have personnel on-hand to assist the elderly or infirmed. Citizens are asked to bring their own shovels, should the ones provided be in use. The Sandbag Locations are the St. Tammany Parish Government- Building on Koop Dr. in Mandeville; the Airport Road Barn on Grantham College Rd in Slidell; the Old Levee District Site on Military Road in Slidell; the Fritchie Barn on 1090 in Pearl River; the Keller Barn on Fish Hatchery Road in Lacombe; and the Covington Barn on N. Florida Street.
The City of Slidell’s sandbag depot will reopen this morning from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the parking lot on the corner of Bayou Lane and Pennsylvania Avenue near Heritage Park – Slidell, La. The sandbag depot will be self-service. Bags will be provided, and shovels will be available for use. Employees will be on hand to help those who need assistance. There is a limit of 15 sandbags per person.
Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller said self-serve sandbag stations will be set up at the main fire station in each of the following communities: Natalbany, Loranger, Husser, Wilmer, Kentwood, and Independence. In the 8th Ward, sandbag stations will be set up at the fire station on LA 445 and at the new station on LA 22 east in Bedico. In Ponchatoula, the fire stations on LA 22 east and west of the city limits will have self-serve sandbag stations, as will the Hammond Baptist Fire Station.Miller said residents will need to bring their own shovel to fill the sandbags at the self-serve sites.
