Some confusion broke out over the weekend about whether anyone vandalized a makeshift memorial for fallen officer, Capt. Vincent Liberto Jr. Liberto, who served 25 years with the department, was shot and killed following a police pursuit in Sept. of 2019. New Mandeville Mayor Clay Madden called it a wild Saturday morning and said it was a false alarm at the Liberto Police Memorial. Apparently, a civic group, not vandals, took down the worn and tattered flags to replace them with new ones and there was a miscommunication.
