On July 29, the Hammond Police Department responded to Quick Way Food Store, located on 14633 West University Avenue, in response to the cashier reporting that she had been a victim of a quick change scam. This scam is when an individual targets an inexperienced cashier by paying for small-priced items with a large bill. Before the cashier can give back the change, the individual will engage the cashier in a speedy series of money exchanges that confuses the cashier. In the confusion, the suspect tells the cashier how much money to give back, causing the register to be short. The cashier reported two black males and a black female entered the store, and after executing the scam, they walked away with a total of $700.
