St. Tammany Parish school officials said yesterday that public school students in grades Pre-K through 5 will go to school in-person every day when the fall semester begins. Those in grades 6 through 12 will attend two days per week and every other Friday. The board also voted to start school after Labor Day.
The changes were announced at a special school board meeting where many parents and citizens wanted kids back in school and some parents and officials representing teachers said in person learning was too dangerous at this time. The school system released survey results earlier that showed strong support for getting back to school. A teachers’ union survey said teachers were concerned about returning now.
Transportation could be an issue, with buses limited to 50% occupancy under Phase Two. Children will wear masks on the bus and get screened when they arrive at school, although students pre-K through third grade do not have to wear masks.
