Louisiana’s health care workers find themselves at the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.
The state has the second-highest number of hospitalized patients per capita in the U.S., behind only Florida, and the highest number of new infections per capita.
The Louisiana Department of Health said in their Wednesday report that 2,895 patients were hospitalized with COVID in Louisiana. 91% of those patients are unvaccinated. The hospitalization number has continued to grow to a new record high for several days in a row.
5,408 new cases were reported yesterday. The vast majority (98.4%) of these cases are tied to COVID spreading in communities, rather than congregate settings.
This update represents increases across all regions and age groups.
They also reported 55 COVID deaths, the last time the state saw a single-day report this high was August 10 when 93 deaths were reported.
