Due to lack of a quorum at a called special session, the Amite City Council did not appoint an interim council member to serve in the seat of longtime Councilman Emanuel Zanders, who resigned as part of his plea on misdemeanor election offenses stemming from last fall’s election.
The town has the option to appoint a temporary council member to serve in the open seat; however, they only have 20 days from the date of Zanders’ resignation in which to make that appointment.
Even though the sole purpose of Tuesday’s special meeting was to make the interim appointment, only Kris Hart and Rose Sanders, were in attendance.
Without a third council member on site, Mayor Walter Daniels had no option but to declare that the meeting could not convene due to lack of a quorum.
If the city fails to appoint a replacement, the law calls for the Governor to appoint an interim council member who will serve until a special election can be held.
