Gov. John Bel Edwards announced he signed a host of bills into law from the 2021 Legislative Session Sunday, June 6.
Among those that he signed was HB 413, from Mandeville Representative Richard Nelson, which designates a portion of North Causeway Boulevard in St. Tammany Parish as the “Captain Vincent N. Liberto, Jr., Memorial Overpass.”
On September 20,, 2019, Liberto was at his desk as a Mandeville police captain when he answered a call about an officer in need of assistance after a man fled from an attempted traffic stop. Liberto joined that officer, Ben Cato, in the pursuit, which ended at a busy intersection with Liberto fatally shot and Cato suffering a graze wound.
A temporary memorial had been set up at the site since that day.
