The Louisiana Department of Health reported Thursday that the number of confirmed coronavirus deaths in Louisiana surpassed 4,000, marking an increase in the number of deaths reported each day this week. If the current increase continues, Louisiana could have its deadliest day of the pandemic this week. The highest number of deaths reported in one day was on April 5 when the department said 73 people in Louisiana died. Dr. Gina LaGarde is the public health director for Region 9, which covers five parishes on the North Shore. She shared the loss of her cousin from COVID-19 during the governor’s press conference and warned about the cost of not following current coronavirus restrictions.
The Louisiana Department of Health reported 1,345 cases yesterday. 50 deaths were reported, bringing the total to 4,028. 94% of the new cases were from community spread. 31% of the cases were from individuals 29 and younger. 1,457 people are hospitalized and 215 of them are on vents.
