The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway reopened Tuesday after a series of large multi-vehicle crashes closed the bridge for much of the day.
Both north and southbound traffic were being led by a rolling convoy after reopening.
Causeway authorities closed the bridge in both directions around 8:30 a.m. during the morning commute as heavy fog swept in the area.
Numbers are still being tabulated but there were as many as fifty cars impacted by the crashes and thirty victims taken to local hospitals, in what will probably be the biggest day of accidents on the span.
With dense morning fog expected throughout the New Orleans metro area again today, officials say they will be watching conditions for potential closures and urge drivers to stay vigilant on the roadways.
