On September 3, 2024, officers with the Hammond Police Department were conducting patrols of the South Morrison area when they observed a suspicious vehicle in the median of the 1000 block of Villa Roma.
Officers observed the vehicle to be a 2016 Chevrolet Corvette that was still running and had a broken driver side window. Officers further observed damage to the driver’s side door and rear of the vehicle.
Officers were able to determine the vehicle belonged to Ross Downing Chevrolet.
Officers visited the dealership and searched the lot for further evidence. During their search, officers located a red GMC pickup truck that had sustained damage to the rear and passenger side of the vehicle. Officers contacted the dealership to view the security video. While viewing the video, officers observed an unknown individual approach the Corvette, break the window, and enter the vehicle. The individual then started the vehicle and drove around the lot in an attempt to find an exit. It is suspected the individual crashed into the pickup truck while attempting to exit the lot.
