A Hammond teenager was arrested for bringing a gun to school.
The 16 YO male was booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center on Monday, August 19th, on one count of Possession of a Weapon on School Property.
On Saturday, August 17, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) School Resource Officers (SRO) were alerted to a social media video from the day before (Friday) showing a student revealing a gun in his school bag while in a classroom. An investigation confirmed the video was recorded at Hammond Magnet High. Efforts to identify and locate the student began immediately and concluded with the teen’s parents turning him in on Monday.
Sheriff Gerald Sticker said students have to understand that these are dangerous circumstances that are far from funny and their consequences are nothing to be proud of.
Tangipahoa Parish Schools Superintendent Melissa Stilley offered her appreciation for the swift response from the Sheriff’s Office. She said the district will be taking additional measures to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future, and she also asks families to use this case as a starting point for very candid conversations about students bringing weapons on campus.
