
Qualifying ended in St Tammany and that means there will be a new coroner.
Dr. Charles Preston decided not to seek re-election so the job will pass to one of Preston’s current employees, Christopher Tape, who was the only candidate who qualified for the job.
As expected, St. Tammany Parish president Mike Cooper drew a challenger in current Slidell mayor Greg Cromer.
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith finds himself facing two challengers, John Gurba and Tommy Williams.
For Clerk of Court Melissa Henry, the incumbent, will face Jessica Jenkins Brewster.
For the Baton Rouge delegation State Senator Patrick McMath did not draw a challenger, while Senator Beth Mizell drew two, Brittany Gondolfi and Gloria Kates. Senator Bill Wheat also drew two challengers in Randy Bush and Ivan Scioneaux. State Representative Mark Wright will face Richard Ducote and Jim Harlan. And Mary DuBuisson drew two challengers in Heide Alejandro-Smith and Brian Glorioso.
There are also contested races for judge and parish council.
Early voting starts Sept. 30 for the Oct. 14 state primary election. The Louisiana general election is set for Nov. 18.
