Sunday, shortly before 1:00 a.m., Troopers from State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash on LA Hwy 437 near North Fitzmorris Road in St. Tammany Parish.
The crash claimed the life of 34 YO Marlin Swaggerty of Covington.
The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 54 YO Warren Barringer of Hammond, was northbound on LA Hwy 437. At the same time, a motorcycle, driven by Swaggerty, was southbound on LA Hwy 437. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevrolet began to make a left turn onto North Fitzmorris Road and impacted the front of the motorcycle.
After impact, both vehicles traveled off the roadway.
Although wearing a DOT approved helmet, Swaggerty suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Barringer was properly restrained and was uninjured. Barringer provided a breath sample that tested over the legal limit for alcohol.
Troopers booked Barringer at the St. Tammany Parish Jail for Vehicular Homicide, DWI, and Failure to Yield while Turning Left. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Swaggerty and submitted for analysis.
This crash remains under investigation.
