It was a contentious meeting last night for the St Tammany Library Board of Control as they sought to decide the fate of some challenged books.
The books include four children’s picture books, three dealing with transgender characters, and the debut novel of Nobel Prize winning author Toni Morrison. All five have been reviewed by a committee of library staff.
One individual in the crowd, who claimed to be an attorney, was removed by STPSO deputies for disrupting the proceedings.
One byproduct of the meeting was an extension of time for the board to read and review books that have been challenged.
Since controversy over the books began, the board decided to keep any books that have been challenged behind the counter, available by request, until final decisions are made.
