Gov. John Bel Edwards released a statement on the passing of his mother, Mrs. Dora Jean Edwards, saying it was with a heavy heart that he shared that she had passed away.
He said she was the matriarch of the family and, along with his late father Frank, the reason why he is the person he is today. Edwards said she raised eight children, worked for many years as a Charity Hospital nurse, and made the best red beans and rice.
He said his parents instilled in him from an early age the importance of faith, family, and public service.
