Southeastern honored the police officers who were on the scene of a shooting following a high school graduation.
University Police Chief Michael Beckner said his officers almost immediately responded to and detained the suspect at the shooting outside the University Center following Hammond High graduation two months ago.
Yesterday, Chief Beckner presented medals of courage to the six officers who are credited with serving and protecting the campus and the surrounding community in the aftermath of that incident.
Chief Beckner told those assembled at a brief reception inside the Student Union on Monday that the actions of the officers prevented further injury and death.
Three officers and three sergeants each received medals and citations, commending them for their bravery as they ran toward the gunfire that night.
