The Tangipahoa Mosquito Abatement District made an urgent announcement yesterday.
They said the district has had 50 reported West Nile virus positive mosquito samples in their traps last week.
They said they have never seen this amount of West Nile virus activity in the district.
This is nearly 70% of the total number of samples submitted.
The virus is present in every zone of the district.
Nearly every single mosquito trap has tested positive at some point this season.
They called this result alarming and their calculations indicate that they will almost certainly begin seeing human cases soon.
They said PLEASE wear repellent, avoid peak mosquito activity times (dawn and dusk), and dump out standing water around your home. All it takes is one bite. Please protect yourself and your family.
