The Louisiana Department of Health reported its biggest single-day coronavirus case spike since the omicron variant surge.
Louisiana reported 5,436 cases on Thursday. The last time more than 5,000 cases were reported was on Jan. 31, when the state was coming down from the omicron variant surge.
The state reported 567 hospitalizations. That number has doubled in the last month but is still well below where the state was in previous surges.
The largest share of the newly reported cases was among ages 18-29 (19%) and ages 30-39 (16%). Of newly reported cases, 16% come from Region 1 (Greater New Orleans Area) and 16% come from Region 2 (Capital Area).
New variants now amount for about 75% of all new cases reported regionally.
