COVID cases are on the rise again in New Orleans and the city is urging everyone to mask indoors and in crowded spaces.
Dr. Jennifer Avegno, Director of the New Orleans Health Department, spoke yesterday to media and said the city is working to make sure the new surge in cases does not mirror what happened last summer.
She said the actual number of cases could be higher than official counts suggest due to at-home testing.
As of yesterday, Avegno said the city meets the criteria to move from the low-risk category to the medium category according to the CDC metrics.
Avegno said that recent test results have local officials concerned about the potential for a significant summer wave of disease that could overwhelm hospitals, similar to what happened with last summer’s spread of the Delta variant.
