
A sick out among St. Tammany Parish school bus drivers caught school officials off guard as parents scrambled to pick up their students from 14 schools on Friday.
Parents were called around 2 p.m. Friday and told that there would not be enough busses.
More than 60 drivers called in sick throughout the day after dropping students off in the morning.
Despite long waits to retrieve their children, many parents voiced support for the bus drivers, saying they deserve the raise they have been fighting for.
The union has been fighting to raise operational pay for the owner/operators since July, money that union leaders say has not been increased since 1986.
Brandt Osborne, president of the St. Tammany Federation of Teachers and School Employees, said negotiations will continue.
