New Orleans saw more homicides in 2021 than in any other year since before Hurricane Katrina.
There were also more than a dozen carjackings over the past weekend.
In an effort to address the ongoing crime surge in the city, New Orleans lawmakers will hold two meetings over the next week.
The city council will meet Thursday morning at 10 a.m., then again next Monday at 10 a.m., according to council president Helena Moreno’s office.
Members plan to hear from multiple stakeholders in the city’s justice system.
One of the first will be NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, who will address the full council Thursday. District Attorney Jason Williams, as well as several judges are also scheduled to speak.
Both council meetings on crime will be virtual.
