The Louisiana Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday from lawyers representing Ochsner Health and employees challenging the hospital operator’s vaccine mandate and will make a decision on whether the mandate is enforceable.
In this case a Louisiana employer’s right to enforce a vaccine mandate goes up against what employees said was a right to refuse medical treatment.
Ochsner said earlier this year that it would require all employees to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, apply for an exemption, or leave their job. Around 30,000 employees had already received the vaccine or an exemption by a Dec. 1 deadline.
According to officials thirty-four employees have received exemptions and remain employed. Around ten employees left and a few stayed on the job without getting the vaccine while the mandate is paused due to the current litigation.
