On December 4, 2021, at approximately 5:20 am, the Hammond Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle accident on I-55 and US Highway 190 West.
The accident occurred on the southbound side of I-55 on top of the overpass.
The initial investigation revealed that the first impact was between two vehicles and damage was minor.
The other points of impact are believed to have occurred due to heavy fog and the location of the initial crash.
Eighteen total vehicles were involved, and although the damage was extensive, injuries were moderate to minor.
Chief Edwin Bergeron said weather conditions play a huge role in traffic safety and that it was a blessing that the accident was not fatal for the drivers.
This crash is still under investigation by the Hammond Police Department Traffic Division.
