
Due to power outages and other impacts caused by Hurricane Ida, the monthly St. Tammany Parish Council meeting, scheduled for September 2, 2021, has been cancelled.
Further details regarding items on the September agenda will be released when plans are finalized.
St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper provides insights on the conditions throughout St. Tammany Parish following the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. President Cooper said as soon as the sun rose Monday, they began inspecting the damages throughout the Parish so they could mobilize Public Works crews to clear roads. Numerous power lines were downed, trees blocked roadways, and homes and businesses were damaged Parish-wide.
As of last night many local roadways were impassable, due to high water, downed trees and power lines.
CLECO has reported 98% of their customers in St. Tammany Parish are without power. CLECO’s assessment of the damages is expected to happen within the next 2-3 days. Once completed, CLECO will have a plan in place to restore power, which could take several days or weeks. According to CLECO officials western St. Tammany sustained a majority of the damage.
Residents should assume every downed power line is live and avoid them at all costs. Do not come in contact with any downed power lines and you should report all downed lines to 1-800-622-6537 or 911.
All St. Tammany Parish Government offices and locations will remain closed until it is safe to reopen. St. Tammany Parish’s Emergency Operations Center is fully operational with representatives answering phones from all partners and stakeholders. When using a generator, it is critical to your safety to do so correctly. The primary hazards to avoid when using a generator are carbon monoxide, electrocution, and fire. For directions on how to properly use your generator look to the manufacturer’s instructions or visit www.energy.gov.
The Tammany Trace, Bayou Lacombe Bridge, Camp Salmen, Northshore Beach and the Kids Connection Playground are closed and will remained closed until it is deemed safe for reopen.
The curfew is still in effect and will remain in effect until it is deemed safe by St. Tammany Parish Government. This curfew is in place to protect the citizens of St. Tammany as well as the crews working to clear roads and reinstate power.
