Detectives with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Major Crimes Division were called to investigate a shooting which occurred Friday (July 5) evening, involving officers with the Mandeville Police Department.
The incident originated when an officer with Mandeville Police responded to a residence in the 700 block of Heavens Drive for a welfare check. Upon arrival, the officer heard a woman screaming inside. The female quickly exited the residence, alerting the officer that a male inside was threatening to kill her. Seconds later, the male emerged, armed with a gun, and shot the female multiple times.
The Mandeville officer verbally engaged with the male, asking him numerous times to drop his weapon, while taking cover and awaiting backup. The officer attempted non-lethal force by tasing the male, who then pointed the gun at the officer. At this time, a second responding officer fired upon the man.
Both individuals were transported to a local hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Christopher Tape authorized the release of the identities of the man and woman killed in the incident. They were 46 YO David Vang and 48 YO Laina Lee. Tape will perform autopsies in coordination with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
No law enforcement personnel were injured.
