Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Gerald Sticker is happy to report that a Ponchatoula couple is safe after being rescued in Lake Maurepas on Saturday morning, July 6.
The couple reported idling west of the I-55 bridge in Lake Maurepas around 8 a.m. to collect crab traps when a change in winds flipped their boat over. They were quickly spotted by other boaters thanks to their life vests and pulled to safety.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Division later recovered the boat from the waterway in order to return it to the couple.
Sheriff Sticker wants to highlight the importance of having and using life vests and having an emergency plan to seek assistance before heading out on the water.
