
Storms rushed across the Northshore late Tuesday afternoon, downing trees and closing I-55, while leaving thousands without power.
The National Weather Service issued thunderstorm watches for Washington and Tangipahoa parishes through 8 p.m. Tornado warnings were issued just after 5 p.m. near Amite, Roseland, and Mount Hermon.
Both northbound and southbound lanes of travel were closed on I-55 near LA Hwy 16 due to several large trees across the roadway. I-55 fully reopened to traffic in both directions around 10 p.m.
As many as 10,000 households were without power in Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. In St Tammany they were reporting 5,000 without power.
The City of Amite announced a curfew from 10 p.m. through 5 a.m., asking citizens to stay off the streets due to safety concerns from fallen trees and other wind-produced hazards.
Much of the damage extended from Amite up to Kentwood.
