Shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday, April 01, Slidell Police received multiple 911 calls regarding an accident in which an Amtrak train collided with a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban near Gause Boulevard and Front Street, a major railroad crossing in Slidell.
The Suburban, occupied by a Slidell-area couple, came to a rest on the railroad tracks prior to the collision.
According to the driver, as the train was approaching, the vehicle was inadvertently shifted into the “park” position, which prevented it from moving off the railroad tracks. Currently, no evidence supports that the Suburban drove around the crossing arms.
The Amtrak train was traveling northbound, at the time of the collision, and was occupied by passengers; none of them sustained any injuries. The occupants of the Suburban were transported to a local area hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.
The crash is being investigated by the Slidell Police Department’s Traffic Division, Amtrak Police, and Norfolk Southern Police.
